James A. Smith, 77, of Centralia passed away Sept. 7, 2019, while working in his yard. He was born Feb. 13, 1942, to James E. and Dorothy M. (Anders) Smith in Centralia, WA.

Jim lived on Seminary Hill his entire life. He graduated from Centralia High School in 1960, promptly joining the United States Air Force where he served his tour of duty at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, Keflavik Air Base in Iceland and McClellan Air Force Base in California, working in the expanding field of electronics. Upon discharge, Jim enrolled at Centralia College and later at Western Washington University, earning two degrees: Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts and Education. He had learned the basics of welding, metal fabrication and other industrial skills from his father at an early age.

Jim began a teaching career in St. Helens, OR. After the death of his father, he returned to Centralia to manage the family needs. Jim was employed by Pacific Power (now TransAlta) as a mechanic and then promoted to plant training supervisor. He was later hired by Centralia College as an instructor of welding and drafting, retiring in 2006 to pursue his many interests which included singing, playing multiple instruments, writing both music and poetry, building and riding motorcycles, creating unique mechanical projects and performing with the Old Time Fiddlers. He and the group brought joy to retirement communities and senior centers throughout Lewis and Thurston Counties. With his friend, Dale Fye, Jim recently restored a rare 1906 12 HP Field and Brundage, one cylinder engine that had been in his family for over 60 years and began showing it at antique engine events in Washington and Oregon.

In 2012, Jim was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. His doctors advised that vigorous exercise along with medication would delay the incapacities that PD brings. Jim followed that advice and stayed active until the very end.

Jim is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Ann (Charles) Yocom of Centralia and Judith K. (Ronald) Merchant of Mount Vernon, WA; a niece, Arlene G. (William) Mallory of Yakima, WA; and nephew, Wesley A. Yocom of Centralia; many cousins; and his special friends, Dale Fye/April Campbell and Charlie/Melody Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and younger sister, Anne E. (Betty Lou) Gragg.

No services are planned at this time, but a celebration of life will be held in the spring. Remembrances may be sent to the Lewis County Animal Shelter, Chehalis Senior Center, Lewis Co. Historical Society or charity of choice.
