James A. Miller, 78, of Onalaska, Wash., died May 11, 2017, in Olympia, Wash. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.

James was born in Antwerp, N.Y., to Jackson and Vida Miller Dec. 25, 1938. After graduating from high school, James joined the United States Air Force to pursue his fascination of flying. Becoming a flight engineer on the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter allowed him to travel and experience most of the globe. He retired as a master sergeant from Travis Air Force Base in California in 1976, after serving 20 years in the Air Force. He then became a chemical process engineer for Ball Metal Corporation James retired from Ball Metal in 1992, and relocated to Chehalis, Wash. He later moved to Onalaska, Wash., where he served as the financial officer for the American Legion Post 508, The Sons of The American Legion Post 508 and also the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12012.

James is survived by his wife, Joy Miller of Onalaska; sons, James Miller of Maine and Bret Miller of California; grandchildren, Joey Miller, Holley Miller, Bret Miller and Brooke Miller; and step-daughter, Emily Kilmer.
