Alfred J. Good

Alfred J. Good, 102, passed away Nov. 13, 2019. He was born April 16, 1917, in Chehalis, Wash., to John and Minnie Good and grew up on a farm in the Boistfort Valley.

Al graduated from Boistfort High School in 1936. He played sports and was on the championship basketball and baseball teams in 1935 and 1936. Al then attended the University of Puget Sound. He married Louise Hendrickson, June 15, 1940. They were married for 69 years and had two children, Gary and Sandra. They lived in Centralia, Auburn, Orcas Island and Anacortes, and back to Centralia in 2000.

Al worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 31 years as a brakeman and conductor and retired in 1972. He retired on Orcas Island, built his home, loved growing rhododendrons and azaleas and started “Good Life Gardens”. Al coached Little League and umpired baseball for years. He also loved to fish and hunt. Al built a summer cabin on Sapeye Lake in Canada, where he spent 19 summers with Louise and their children in nature. He love to dance and travel, but probably his biggest joy was to attend the University of Washington Husky football games, in which he had season tickets for 59 years and attended three Husky Rose Bowls.

Al was preceded in death by his wife, Louise in 2009; and son, Gary.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Hadley; brother, John Good; five grandchildren, Linda Young, Peter Marney, Gina Ender, Allen Ender and Cindy Ender; and nine great-grandchildren.
