Two Yelm Men Die After Truck Goes Into Canal

Two Yelm men died Wednesday morning after the truck they were in went off State Route 507 near Vail Road, crashed through a fence and into the Centralia Power Canal.

Police believe the accident occurred around 5 a.m. when it was still dark.

There are no witnesses to the accident at this time, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Johnna Batiste.

It wasn’t until hours later that the accident was discovered.

The front driver’s side of the black Toyota truck could be seen still connected to the fence while the rest of the truck was fully submerged. At around 3 p.m. police closed the highway for about half an hour while a tow truck worked to pull the truck from the canal.

Batiste confirmed inside the truck were two men, ages 20 and 26, from the Yelm area. Next of kin has not been notified.

It was raining heavily this morning and there was little to no road evidence.

“There’s no indication as to why they left the road,” Batiste said.
