USFS Launches Northwest Recreation App

The U.S. Forest Service has launched a new mobile app designed to connect Pacific Northwest users with outdoor recreation.

The Pacific Northwest Forests app will show hiking trails, camping, picnic spots and boating areas near users, based on their GPS data. It will have up-to-date information about fires, trail and road conditions and photo galleries. The app launched Monday for Apple iOS users, and an Android version will be released soon.

The app is the first of its scale in the Forest Service and encompasses the region’s 17 national forests and scenic areas.

“That’s one of the major reasons why providing our region-wide recreational information in a mobile app is so important,” Chris Bentley, digital media specialist for the Pacific Northwest Region, said in a release. “Many of our forests are adjacent to one another and our visitors shouldn’t have to download multiple apps to connect more easily with their public lands.”
