Toledo Slated to Receive Funds For Water and Sewer Project in Proposed Capital Budget

The city of Toledo is slated to receive $469,000 to begin a water and sewer project, according to the House of Representatives’ proposed capital budget. The money is to update the city’s water and sewer comprehensive plan, look at water rights and to do some pre-design for water and sewer line extensions, said Michelle Whitten, city manager, clerk and treasurer.

Whitten said the city is looking to extend its water and sewer from around Betty’s Place (601 N 5th Street in Toledo) up North 5th Street and up Toledo/Vader Road to Plomondon Road toward ToledoTel. The whole extension would be about a quarter of a mile, Whitten said. ToledoTel already has conduit along that route.

Whitten said that route is in the city’s urban growth area and there is property that is classified as small industrial. Bringing water and sewer would make the property more desirable to businesses, she said.

Whitten said the city would like to get water and sewer in the ground within the next five years. The money from the capital budget would fund “all of the preliminary things that would happen.” The city would begin looking at its comprehensive plan as soon as the funds became available from the capital budget.

In addition to the money for that project, the proposed capital budget lists $52,000 for “Toledo Beautification” — a project from the last budget cycle. Whitten said the city has spent “a little over half” of the funds so far. The $52,000 is a reimbursement grant, so the city sends receipts for the money it spends to be reimbursed.

The city has used the money for different projects for the downtown corridor, such as an informational sign that explains the water tower mural and landscaping work.
