Thurston County Commissioners appointed Jennifer Walker as the new public works director on Monday.

The appointment came after a nationwide recruitment process. The commissioners held an executive session on Sept. 1 to evaluate the candidates and voted at a public meeting on Monday to appoint Walker.

Walker is currently the strategic planning and asset manager for the Pierce County Planning and Public Works Department. There she is responsible for strategic planning, performance management, asset management, project management and policies and procedures. Walker has worked for Pierce County Public Works in various leadership positions since 2002.

“Jennifer (Walker’s) background in strategic planning and project management will be a real asset to the Public Works and county leadership teams,” said County Manager Ramiro Chavez in a press release. “She will bring a lot of energy into this position and will move Public Works forward in a very strategic direction.”

Walker will start in Thurston County on Oct. 16.
