The Centralia Timberland Library will host local researcher and historian Shawn Murphy as he tells the story of The Bahada, an 86-foot steam tugboat that unexpectedly sank in the vicinity of Anacortes in 1926.

The hour-long event begins at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17.

Built in Seattle in 1902, the The Bahada operated along the Pacific Coast during the turn of the last century. It was owned by Gilkey Brothers Towing Co. when it sank in 1926.

Prior to its sinking near Huckleberry and Saddlebag Islands, the tugboat sank in Los Angeles in 1923 and was salvaged later that year. The final sinking is unexplained, and all nine crewmembers were lost.

According to the press release from the library, Murphy will tell the full story of The Bahada including his personal connection to the vessel. His great uncle was one of the Gilkey brothers.
