Seminary Hill Group to Dedicate Picnic Shelter

The Friends of Seminary Hill Natural Area will be holding a ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 12, to dedicate the new Stellajoe’s Picnic Haven at the natural area.

The guest of honor will be Stellajoe Staebler, who will be celebrating her 100th birthday the same weekend. She gave the FSHNA $5,000 last year to kick off the fundraising for the picnic shelter.

Other individuals and several corporations followed her lead with their own donations, but her gift was by far the largest. The shelter was her idea and will be a visible marker of her legacy at the hill.

The FSHNA will be presenting Staebler with a plaque in honor of her lifetime of service at the hill.

Staebler led the effort to preserve the woods on Seminary Hill in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s when it became apparent the city wanted to log it.

The ceremony will include remarks from Bill Moeller, who was mayor at the time, and longtime FSHNA president Sandy Godsey. Also, current Mayor Bonnie Canaday has been invited to speak.
