Port of Centralia to Submit Two Applications to City of Centralia

Port of Centralia commissioners will be submitting two applications to the city of Centralia, one to rezone a property the port acquired and another asking to include roadwork on the city’s six-year transportation improvement plan.

Both measures were approved unanimously during Wednesday’s meeting.

According to the port’s Executive Director Kyle Heaton, each year the city updates its comprehensive plan. Earlier this year, the port acquired a property of about 1 acre in size on Alder Street, which will be submitted to the city for rezoning.

The other application focuses on the port’s work with the Washington State Department of Transportation on the Mellen Street off ramp and the Yew Street extension. The port will submit an application for the project to be included in the city’s transportation improvement plan.

If the city includes the project in its plan, it would be eligible for grant funding.

Port commissioners also approved a small variance in regard to the mental health evaluation and treatment center Cascade will construct near the Port of Centralia office.

The 22-bed facility aims to meet a need that mental health patients were previously unable to get in the area.

The port’s master plan requires port properties and residential properties to be separated by a buffer, usually trees. On this property, however, the city has an easement for a water line. The city asked the port to not plant vegetation on the ground above the water line, so instead commissioners decided to approve a 6-foot-tall wood fence.
