Centralia Pledges $10,000 for Local Review of FEMA Flood Maps

By The Chronicle

The Centralia City Council on Tuesday night unanimously approved a $10,000 contribution from the Wastewater Department reserve to go toward the local FEMA Working Group.

City staff have been participating with the group, along with Lewis County, the city of Chehalis, Port of Chehalis, the Chehalis-Centralia Airport Board and the Chamber of Commerce as they take a skeptical look at proposed new maps of floodplains and floodways in the Chehalis Basin. The group has been focused on the review and revision of updated FEMA maps. The group has negotiated a charter agreement with all stakeholders.

To date, the city of Centralia has been a partner in the effort, but had not contributed financially. Contributions by other partners have netted $98,000, and the group estimates about $120,000 will be needed this year to continue the process.
