The Board of Lewis County Commissioners on Monday approved the purchase of a new excavator at a cost of $274,885.74 for the solid waste division of the county’s public works department.

The old excavator was scheduled for replacement and a replacement purchase was budgeted for 2018.

It will replace an excavator purchased in 2012 that was used mostly at the recycling and yard waste area at the Centralia Transfer Station.

The excavator will be purchased utilizing the solid waste utility fund excavator reserve funds.

Erik Martin, the director of public works, was authorized to sign the contract between Pape Machinery and the county for the new equipment.

Steve Skinner, with the solid waste division, said the current excavator has gone beyond its expected life.
