A Morton man was arrested Thursday after witnesses in Onalaska reported seeing a shirtless man blocking the road with his motor home and shooting a no-trespassing sign with a rifle.

Anthony C. Burchfield, 41, of Morton, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, a class B felony.

Burchfield is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a 1995 conviction for first-degree assault, according to court documents.

Superior Court Judge Joely O’Rourke granted a request for $25,000 bail from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, based on Burchfield’s criminal and warrant history.

His next court hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

According the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 7 p.m. Thursday to the 1400 block of Middle Fork Road in Onalaska to a report of a shooting complaint.

Witnesses reported seeing a white male wearing shorts and suspenders, but no shirt, shooting a no trespass sign.

The man was associated with a motor home that was blocking the road.

Deputies arrived and contacted Burchfield and found a .22 caliber long rifle. The rifle and expended ammunition were taken as evidence, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Burchfield reportedly denied shooting the gun, and said it belonged to his mother, according to court documents.
