Morgan and Lyon Advance in Rochester School Board Race

Glen Morgan and Piper Lyon will be facing off for the district 4 director seat in November’s general election.

Morgan led in votes with 531, or 46 percent, in the district that straddles the Thurston-Lewis county line.

Piper hauled in 355 combined votes or 31 percent. She was trailed by Brian Boman, who received 265 ballots or 23 percent of combined votes.

The top two candidates were obviously happy with the results.

“We’ll take what we can get,” Lyon told The Chronicle Tuesday night.

Lyon, who said she was not a big campaigner, expressed excitement at the election results. She said she would be applying to be temporarily appointed to a school board position vacated by sitting school district Director Connie Smejkal in September, according to Lyon. She will still continue to campaign for a slot on the board.

Morgan said he would continue to work on property rights because of their direct effect on school funding. Restrictions on property have a downward effect on property values, according to Morgan, who is a project manager for The Freedom Foundation, and has been a vocal and active critic of the Thurston County Critical Areas Ordinance update process currently underway.

“It also makes it difficult for us to pass levies when our property values are being devalued on a regular basis,” Morgan said.

Morgan said he had spoken with Lyon and felt “we are the same page about getting the best education for our kids.”
