A Spokane man charged in a Chehalis burglary and for picking an elderly man’s pocket in Morton pleaded guilty this month to both charges.

Jason A. Brown, 34, pleaded guilty Oct. 4 to first-degree theft and residential burglary in the two cases. He was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison on each charge, to run concurrently, with credit for 27 days in custody.

Brown was charged in Lewis County Superior Court Sept. 11 with second-degree robbery and on an amended charge of residential burglary in an earlier incident in which he allegedly gave police a false name. He was charged under that name and released on unsecured bail because the other identity did not have criminal history.

According to court documents, Chehalis police contacted Brown on Aug. 21 coming out of a Chehalis residence in the 100 block of Southeast Fir Street. Brown told police he was keeping an eye on the house for family. However, he later admitted he didn’t know the owners and was found in possession of items from the home.

He was charged and released on unsecured bail after his first court appearance, and didn’t return to subsequent court dates.

On Aug. 29, the Morton Police Department responded to an alleged robbery. A suspect reportedly walked up to an elderly man and asked for money, then took the man’s wallet from his pocket.

The incident was caught on security footage and Brown was later identified as a suspect.

At the time, Brown had active warrants for first-degree theft in Kittitas County and three warrants for residential burglary in Spokane County.
