Washington state has been selected to participate in a campaign called the National Fitness Champion, and schools have the opportunity to win a $100,000 state-of-the-art fitness center for their efforts, according to a press release from Gov. Jay Inslee’s office.

The campaign is put on through the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils, and aims to fight childhood obesity.

Elementary and middle schools are recognized for demonstrating innovative ways of introducing physical activity and wellness in their curriculum.

“I encourage every elementary and middle school in Washington to compete in this great opportunity,” Inslee said in the release. “Now together with the fitness councils, we are helping to ensure our children and grandchildren get fit and stay fit for healthier, longer, more rewarding lives.”

Three schools in the state will be selected by the fitness councils as competition winners. Each will be awarded $100,000 for a fitness center. The equipment for the facility will be provided by TuffStuff Fitness International.

The nomination process opened March 21 and runs through the end of May.

The National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils program will be in all 50 states in the coming years, the release said. The foundation’s goal is to build a nation of fit, healthy kids.

Each fitness center awarded is financed through public and private partnerships with companies like Coca-Cola, Amerigroup Foundation and Nike.
