Lewis County’s IT department is warning members of the public about spam email messages that appear to be sent from county employees.
The majority of the messages pretend to include invoices on behalf of a Lewis County employee in an effort to appear legitimate, a public service announcement from the county states.
“They are indeed fake,” states the announcement. “These emails are not coming from any county computer; rather, they are being sent from organizations and people who make a living sending out these fake emails to take advantage of people. We have noticed an increase in sophistication with how these spam messages are being crafted to appear as if county users are sending them.”
Since county employees interact with members of the public on a daily basis, their names and email addresses are readily available to others, according to the county.
“Our recommendation is to be diligent when receiving any emails with links or file attachments,” states the announcement. “Please ensure they are legitimate, regardless if the listed sender is known or not. If you are unsure, always err on the side of caution.”
