The Board of Lewis County Commissioners on Monday proclaimed April 16 through 22 as Earth Week, recognizing Earth Day on Sunday.

The board approved a resolution stating that “the steps we can take to protect and preserve our natural environment through education, partnerships and positive actions should be encouraged in Lewis County.”

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 to encourage “environmental awareness,” according to the resolution.

An Earth Day Celebration organized by the Lewis County Solid Waste Utility and Centralia College is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday at Centralia College.

An additional special recycling event during Earth Week — styrofoam recycling at the Central Transfer Station — is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
