President Barack Obama signed a bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler into law on Tuesday. The measure, called the Safe Medications for Moms and Babies Act, is designed to encourage research into how medications taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding affect the mother and child, according to a press release from her office.

The act was sponsored by Herrera Beutler and Kathy Castor, D-Florida, last spring.

The act will establish a task force of federal and medical experts to research these issues, as well as establish a plan to identify and address gaps in current knowledge, make recommendations and collaborate on research and detail what can be done to promote the development of safer medications, the release said.
