MONROE (AP) — State highway officials say hot weather is melting sections of U.S. Highway 2 between Monroe and Gold Bar. The Daily Herald newspaper reported maintenance crews have been putting chip seal on about eight miles of the highway that have been damaged.
The heat combined with pressure from hot tires rolling on top of the road cased the oil in the asphalt to move to the top and the rocks to settle at the bottom, which led to holes developing on the surface.
The Washington Department of Transportation hopes the chip seal will suffice as a temporary solution until they can work on a more permanent fix.
The state plans to start grinding out the chip seal and laying new asphalt on July 6.
