A House committee will hear testimony Thursday on a bill from Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, to allow distilleries on tribal land.

Calling the original ban “antiquated,” Herrera Beutler spokeswoman Angeline Riesterer said in an email that the bill “will allow tribal members to pursue the same economic opportunities as everyone else.” Riesterer said the proposal has support from tribes and bipartisan members of Congress.

Chehalis Tribe Chairman Harry Pickernell is slated to testify at the hearing. The 11 a.m. PDT event will be held under the the Subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs, which is part of the House Natural Resources Committee.
