For this year’s spring play, at the Roxy Theater in Morton, OnStage Children’s Theatre Education Program Production presents “Disney’s Little Mermaid JR,” a mix between Disney’s broadway production and the book by Hans Christian Andersen.

OnStage produces three children’s plays per year as well as a two-week summer program theater camp. The organization serves children from ages 6-18, and this production is the biggest and youngest cast OnStage has had for a play. Since January, the cast has been preparing for this production, working with directors and choreographers. All the children’s costumes are also custom-made by adult volunteers.

Producer Tracy Germer has been involved with OnStage since 2018, first volunteering as a parent and then as a craft coordinator. This is the first play she has produced with OnStage, and she has enjoyed working with the young cast. Germer’s job as producer is to reach out to the community and get kids involved as well as take care of background details like feeding the kids healthy snacks during rehearsals.

“What I’m doing is reaching out to the community and making sure people are aware that this program exists and getting more kids involved who might not otherwise have access to the arts or may not have tried anything like this before,” Germer said.

She is also looking forward to seeing the children’s hard work at the production and said her time as producer has been fun and rewarding. The show is great for everyone to see, Germer said.

“I just love seeing the growth that kids have from when we meet them in January and cast them into their parts and see how they blossom and sparkle trying on new personas, having the attention on them in a positive way. That’s always really fun,” Germer said.

The show will be on May 3 and 10 at 7 p.m. and May 4 and 11 at 2 p.m. at the Roxy Theater in Morton. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and can be purchased at BCJ Gallery, the theater box office or online at www.mortonroxy.org/.
