Recent fires in Lewis County have destroyed properties, and owners affected can begin the destroyed property claim process at the Assessor’s Office.

Assessor Dianne Dorey issued a press release Monday reminding property owners that they can file claims for valuation assessments, which will affect taxes after a fire or other event.

Destroyed property forms are available at the Assessor’s Office in the Lewis County Courthouse at 351 NW North St., Chehalis, on the Assessor’s page on www.lewiscountywa.gov or by calling (360) 740-1392.

Completed forms can be hand-delivered, mailed or faxed to (360) 740-1262.

Following the submission, a county appraiser will inspect and determine a value for the property. Appraisers drive marked vehicles and wear green or orange uniform shirts under safety vests and identification badges. They will also leave business cards.

In the press release, Dorey said to call the Assessor’s Office if someone without proper identification claims to be an appraiser.
