A 26-year-old Packwood man was injured in a crash early Thursday morning and is likely to be charged with driving under the influence after allegedly admitting to deputies that he had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana.

Due to the nature of the injuries, the man was not booked into the Lewis County Jail, said Sheriff’s Office Field Operations Chief Bruce Kimsey. The suspect was transported to Morton General Hospital for multiple injuries to his face and body.

Deputies were initially dispatched at 2:14 a.m. Thursday to the 300 block of Cannon Road in Packwood after receiving a report of a car striking a power pole.

At the scene, authorities noted a 1998 honda Civic resting in the ditch along the westbound lane. The vehicle’s front had sustained serious damage, and was partially wrapped around the pole, said Kimsey.

The pole itself was broken at its halfway point.

A deputy and a Washington State Patrol trooper responded to the hospital, where the man allegedly admitted to drinking and smoking marijuana. A search warrant was subsequently sought for a blood test.
