County Pauses Veterans Relief Program During Search for New Staffer

Some of Lewis County’s service for veterans are on hold as officials search for a new veterans benefit specialist to replace the recently departed George Dodd.

“We have it advertised, and we’re trying to get someone else in here,” said Public Health and Social Services Director Danette York. “We’re trying to get someone sometime in December, January at the latest.”

Dodd had recently completed state-funded training to become a Veterans Services Officer, which gave him access to the Department of Veterans Affairs online portal to file benefit and disability funds on behalf of veterans. While his departure is a loss, York said Dodd’s replacement will need to have those same qualifications or be able to obtain them within six months.

“George did a lot,” York said. “Big shoes to fill. But I think we’ll be able to find it.”

Dodd’s last day was Nov. 30, and he left to take an exceptional job opportunity elsewhere, according to county commissioner Edna Fund.

“Hopefully we can get that going again as quick as possible,” Fund said. “He was a great resource for our veterans.”

Though the Veterans Relief Program is currently on hiatus, those who used its services are still encouraged to contact the Public Health and Social Services Department for their needs. The department can be reached at 360-740-1223.

“We will try to either refer them or help them,” York said.
