County GOP Chair Withdraws from Freeholder Race

Citing her responsibilities as chair of the Lewis County Republican Party, Olga Miller withdrew her candidacy Monday from a contested freeholder race.

“We have county elections, we have legislative elections, we’ve got a U.S. Senate race,” she said. “I really did not have time to campaign for the freeholder position. … It’s just hard to divide between running my own campaign for freeholder and taking care of the other responsibilities I have.”

Miller had filed to run in District 2 Subdistrict 3. Dianna Peck also withdrew from that race, leaving Bob Bozarth and Jen Slemp on the ballot. In District 3 Subdistrict 5, Eric Duerst also ended his candidacy. Michael Messmore is now unopposed for that freeholder position.

Each freeholder subdistrict still retains at least one candidate.

Fifteen freeholders from throughout Lewis County will be elected in the 2018 general election, but will take office only if voters pass a home rule measure in November. If the proposal passes, the freeholders will be tasked with drawing up a new governing document for the county.
