Bicyclists to Tour West Lewis County in Ride the Willapa

Tour scenic western Lewis County from the seat of a bicycle during the third annual Ride the Willapa Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24.

Ride the Willapa 2018 will offer riders a total of 34 miles in two days with an overnight campout sandwiched between those two days of riding. The 2018 route will take riders from Chehalis to Rainbow Falls State Park and back, and there might even be a longer route for people who want to log some extra miles.

Experience the beauty of the forests, rivers and farmland of quiet rural west Lewis County from a trail that once served as a railroad that a century ago brought passengers and freight through the region. This event is geared for the whole family, and riders will find the trail a peaceful and scenic journey.

The ride starts at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis on Saturday morning and proceeds along 17 miles of easy-going trail toward Rainbow Falls State Park.

Join the overnight campout at the state park, then head back into Chehalis the next morning.

It’s not just about the ride, either, as events such as the Tour De Farms will give riders a chance to hop off the bike and explore several local farms on Saturday just six miles in.

This ride is fully supported with trail monitors along the route, medical support provided by the Lewis County Medical Reserve Corps, and food/water stops sponsored by local community organizations. Bring your luggage and a tent, and volunteers from UPS will truck it to the park.

For detailed information on the ride and its history, visit ridethewillapa.com.

Master Recycler Composters to Hold Open House

The WSU Lewis County Master Recycler Composter volunteers will host an open house 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at their compost demonstration site at the Central Transfer Station in Centralia. Tours of the site and two classes will be featured.

Beginning at 10 a.m. volunteers will demonstrate how to build a hugelkultur, a composting raised bed. Hugelkultur, which is German for “hill culture,” is a good alternative to burning branches and tree debris.

Hugelkultur mounds retain moisture, help property owners avoid off-site hauling of wood debris, provides long-term enrichment to soils, is inexpensive to build and is easy to manage.

A worm composting class will begin at 11 a.m. Class participants will learn how worms can eat kitchen waste and make a great medium to add nutrients to their soil. They will also build a worm bin — complete with red wiggler worms – to take home, so they can immediately start composting. The worm bin supplies are limited to one per family while supplies last.

In addition to the classes, volunteers will be on hand to provide tours of the compost demonstration area and the worm shed, and answer questions about recycling, composting and becoming an MRC volunteer.

The transfer station is located at 1411 S. Tower Ave.
