Class on Worm Composting Planned

Learn how worms perform their composting magic at a vermicomposting class at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the WSU Lewis County Extension meeting room in the basement of the Lewis County Courthouse, Chehalis.

The class is free, but people who pre-register by Oct. 2 will be guaranteed the supplies to make a worm compost bin to make during the session. Call 360-740-1451 to preregister for the class.

One highlight of the class will be a drawing for an active worm bin that has red wigglers in action and finished compost, said Melanie Case, recycling program coordinator for the Lewis County Solid Waste Utility, which is putting on the program in conjunction with the WSU/Lewis County Master Recycler Composter volunteers.

Vermicomposting is a composting technique in which people use worms to break down their kitchen waste. Worms will eat vegetable and fruit scraps, old bread, coffee grounds, coffee filters, tea bags and egg shells, then produce castings (or manure) that can be made into a liquid fertilizer or mixed in with dirt to make a nutrient-rich soil for houseplants and gardens. Meat, dairy products, bones and garbage should not be placed in the worm bin.

Instructors will be walking participants through the steps to make their own worm composting bin out of a plastic 10-gallon tote and setting up the bedding for the worms to begin composting.

The worm composting class is a series of workshops the MRC volunteers offer to teach community members about composting, soil health and recycling. People who participate in four of the core classes will be eligible to become a MRC volunteer.
