The Lewis County Board of Commissioners recognized the importance of farmers markets in local communities by declaring this week, Aug. 2-8, as Farmers Market Week at its Monday meeting.

According to the proclamation read by Commissioner Edna Fund, the markets provide fresh and affordable products, help develop food systems supporting sustainable farms, revitalize communities and provide opportunities for farmers and consumers to meet.

Rachael Reiton, manager for the Community Farmers Market in Chehalis, said more than 28 farmers are participating in this year’s market, making up more than 90 percent of the market’s vendors.

“It truly is a farmers market,” she said.

Commissioner Bill Schulte said the market has a wide selection of goods, including breads, honey and vegetables.

Reiton said not only do farmers provide healthy food options, but also a fun time for people.

“We are very proud of being a core, festive event for people to come and celebrate,” Reiton said.

Markets in Lewis County are open in Chehalis on Tuesday, Winlock on Wednesday, Centralia on Friday, and Pe Ell and Packwood on Saturday.

It is also national and state Farmers Market Week.
