Commissioner: No Decisions Yet for Proposed Tacoma Rail Line Purchase

Posted

Commissioner Bill Schulte told The Chronicle Wednesday that no decisions regarding the proposed purchase of 20 miles of the Tacoma Rail line have been made.

Schulte said an executive session meeting on the $3 million purchase was held last week. After the involved agencies meet with Tacoma Rail, a public meeting will be held, he said.

Lewis County is considering the purchase of the line with the city of Chehalis.

A $58,350 feasibility study on the idea of buying the line between Chehalis and Maytown has been done. Half of the study was funded by a federal grant. The study had not yet been made a public document.

Schulte previously said that if the study shows the purchase isn’t economically feasible, the government agencies won’t move forward with it.

The county and Chehalis entered an agreement with Tacoma in February 2014 to have three years to pay $3 million for the 20 miles of railroad between Chehalis and Maytown.
