Child Find Screenings Scheduled for Children Birth to 5 Years of Age

Child Find screenings have been scheduled for rural schools in Lewis County. The screenings are for children from birth to 5 years of age.

Each spring, staff with the Lewis County Special Education Cooperative teams up with In-Tot to conduct developmental screenings for children.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires all districts to have an annual comprehensive Child Find system to ensure all children in need of early intervention are located, identified and referred, said Juli Aselton, coordinator of the screenings.

The cooperative conducts the screenings in 13 rural school districts.

“While this screening is for early intervention, we encourage and invite any family to participate that would like to check the development level of their child/children,” Aselton said in an email.

Professionals screen the children for vision, hearing, motor coordination, speech and language, learning skills, and social and emotional behaviors.

At the end of the screening, a psychologist or director reviews the results with the parents.

The screening does not replace regular medical care, but provides the family with additional information on the child and their development.

The service is free.

Participants are advised to call their local schools to set up an appointment for their birth to 5-year-old child. If living in a temporary situation, families may contact the district where they are staying to attend a screening.

To start kindergarten in September, a child must be 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2016, and have up-to-date immunizations.
