Centralia Plans to Flush Hydrants

Posted

The city of Centralia announced this week that the city’s water department employees will begin flushing fire hydrants starting Monday.

The process is scheduled to continue throughout the city for approximately three weeks.  Hydrant flushing removes sediment from the main water lines and introduces fresh water to dead-end lines.

The flushing process requires water to be expelled in large quantities at a high velocity from the mains through fire hydrants. Drivers and pedestrians in the Centralia area are asked to use caution when they observe water flowing from fire hydrants.

Households should check their water supply by running a faucet before washing clothing or performing other water-using activities in order to keep cloudy water from being used.  “Customers may wish to conduct such activities before 7:30 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m. during these three weeks to avoid times when water might be cloudy,” according to the city.
