The Centralia City Council approved a memorandum of understanding between the city police and wastewater utilities departments Tuesday evening as part of its consent agenda.

The agreement continues a partnership between the two entities that allows the police department to use the old water treatment plant, located at 1401 Mellen St., as a training and support facility. Under the new MOU, the CPD is permitted to use portions of the 8.5 acre property for public training safety training and support services such as emergency management. It can also store equipment, property and evidence there.

A previous agreement between the two departments was signed in 2005 and is set to expire at the end of this year. The new MOU will automatically renew each year, with any mutually-agreed upon changes to be finalized by March 31 of the preceding year. A sum of $24,000 will be transferred annually from the city’s general fund to its wastewater fund in conjunction with the MOU.
