Centralia High School Students Qualify for National SkillsUSA Competition

Posted

Seven students at Centralia High School won SkillsUSA state championships, which qualifies them to compete in the national competition this summer in Louisville, Kentucky. Two of the students, Jake Keehr and Trajan Ziel, were the first from CHS to qualify twice for the national competition.

Keehr, Ziel, Kevin Garduno and Adam Elkins won the TeamWorks championship. TeamWorks consists of a plumber, mason, carpenter and electrician. The national competition requires the team to build a small building with wood and steel walls that has plumbing, wiring and a brick facade.

Melissa Berg won the state championship in Occupational Health and Safety. For the national competition, Berg will present a notebook of her findings on how the construction and wood art classes at CHS comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration laws and how the school teaches safety to a panel of judges.

Inchantra Armitage won the state championship for masonry. For the national competition, she will build a block foundation and construct a brick wall on top of it. Tim Sheets won the state championship in welding sculpture. For the national competition, he will present a portfolio of his work.

The team must raise roughly $10,000 for their trip. To support the team’s trip to Louisville, contact CHS at 360-330-7605.
