Centralia Council Approves $15,000 for Flood Mitigation Work

The city of Centralia will pay the Lewis Economic Development Council $15,000 to fund flood mitigation work in the area.

The money will reimburse Chehalis attorney and Flood Authority member J. Vander Stoep for his work with the Governor’s Chehalis Basin Work Group.

“It’s another investment,” Centralia City Manager Rob Hill said at Tuesday’s council meeting. “We’ve talked about (flooding) more times than I can count. It’s the single biggest problem that we face here.”

Centralia recently received some unanticipated revenue, so the money will come out of the city’s general fund after the council approved an amendment to the 2016 budget.

The Chehalis City Council also approved to pay the money, which is monitored and overseen by the EDC, earlier this May.

The Port of Chehalis will decide on Thursday if it will pay the $15,000 requested.

The Port of Centralia has also been asked to contribute.
