Centralia College has selected Ashlie Oxford and Samantha Haley to be its representatives on the 2019 Coca-Cola All-Washington Academic Team.

They were selected based on their academic achievement, community involvement, and service to the college. They will be honored in the All-Washington Team Awards Ceremony on Thursday at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia. Governor Jay Inslee is expected to speak at the event and present medals to each of the team members.

Both students will receive $250 scholarships from Key Bank and matching scholarships from the Centralia College Foundation.

Ashlie Oxford, 20, of Napavine, is interested in social justice and plans to pursue a career in politics or government.

“I want to be a voice for those who do not have one and be a representative for individuals who are not being positively represented in our government,” she said in a press release. “The world is diverse, and I believe that if we listen to those who are different from us, we can create a better world and environments that meets everyone’s standards.”

Oxford is CC’s chapter president for Phi Theta Kappa, the honors society for two-year colleges, and serves as a Student Ambassador.

Samantha Haley, 23, of Rainier, is working toward a career in nursing. She also works at St. Peter’s Hospital and is active in the Nursing Club on campus.

Haley had an opportunity to experience the healthcare system from the patient’s side after her father was in an accident last year, and said it was eye opening.

“Every patient deserves to understand their diagnoses and should feel comfortable asking any question,” she said. “Although my actions alone may not greatly impact the society’s wellbeing, I like to believe it sets a precedent for those around me and enhances patient safety.”

Both students will be formally recognized at the commencement ceremony at Centralia College in June.
