Centralia City Manager Rob Hill released a statement Friday on the recently announced developments at the Centralia Station project off of Mellen Street.

The news, published by The Chronicle Thursday, included the announcement that Fred Meyer could be coming to the city.

In the statement, Hill said he welcomes the development and that the city is excited to hear that the Port of Centralia is working with Powell Development on the project.

“While not actively involved in the planning or design phase, the city council has maintained full support for the project and the prospective revitalization of the Mellen Street Gateway,” the release said.

Hill also said the city would work to ensure that municipal utilities would have the capacity to support development at the location.

Additionally, Hill said the city is optimistic that the port will receive approval of an access break to Interstate 5 from the Federal Highway Administration.

He said the city is eager to review plans for the project as the permitting agency.

The Port of Centralia approved a real estate and purchase agreement with Powell Investment for roughly 28 acres of property within Centralia Station.

Centralia Station is a 43-acre development that could include shops, restaurants, offices and other businesses.

The Fred Meyer location that could anchor the site would be a 172,000-square-foot store that would include a full fuel center, a drive-through pharmacy and a garden center.

Once Centralia Station is complete, the port estimates it could employ 535 people in Centralia and more than 150 more jobs in the broader community, bringing in $118 million annually in sales and paying $7.1 million in state and local taxes.
