Candidates Emerge in Each Freeholder Subdistrict

Posted

Freeholder candidates have filed to be on the ballot in each of Lewis County’s 15 subdistricts, ensuring representation for each parcel if voters pass a home rule charter in November.

The freeholders will only assume office if the the home rule measure passes, in which case they would be given the responsibility of re-drafting Lewis County’s governing document. With candidates on the ballot for all 15 positions, election officials will not need to open a three-day “second chance” window next week for late-filing hopefuls.

Most notably, former Lewis County Commissioner Bill Schulte, who did not run for reelection in 2016, filed to be a freeholder Friday afternoon for Commissioner District 2 Sub-District 1. Jerry Lord, who last year ran an unsuccessful campaign for Chehalis mayor, also filed Friday as a freeholder for Commissioner District 2 Sub-District 5.

In other late-week filings, county commissioner Gary Stamper has a challenger in the 3rd District. Toledo resident Jerry Pratt, who stated no party preference, filed Thursday to join the race. Stamper is one of the few county incumbents in a contested race. Pratt served as Toledo’s mayor for 12 years.

The most heated race on the ballot got even more crowded Thursday, when Candy Hallom officially mounted another bid for assessor. Hallom narrowly lost the race to incumbent Dianne Dorey in 2014. Hopefuls Tom Crowson and Amanda Price also joined the race early this week, starting a contentious challenge over the role of the assessor.

Meanwhile, state Rep. Richard DeBolt, R-Chehalis, drew a challenger in the 20th District, as Democrat John Thompson filed Friday for the seat. Kelso Independent Mark Smith joined a three-person race for Rep. Ed Orcutt’s, R-Kalama seat. In the 19th District, Republican David Parsons, a Kelso resident, is the second challenger to take on Rep. Brian Blake, D-Longview.
