Editor’s Best Bet: Cheese Days Coming to Toledo

The surge in Lewis County area community festivals rolls on with Toledo Cheese Days Thursday through Sunday.

It all gets underway Thursday with a coloring contest for preschoolers through fourth-graders. Participants can pick up the contest picture at Toledo Market Fresh, and must be turned in by July 3 at the store.

On Thursday night is the Toast of the Big Cheese, at the Morgan Arts Centre, 190 Plomondon Road. Tickets are $12.50. This year’s Big Cheeses are Lewis and Jan Rohrig.

Friday’s events include the Cheddar Open Golf Tournament, Second Time Around Garage Sale, start of Toledo Tennis Tournament, Frog Jumping Contest and bingo.

A key event on Saturday is the 16th annual Car & Motorcycle Show, starting at 7 a.m. at the Toledo Middle School football field. Entry fee is $20. Awards will be a 3 p.m.

Also on Saturday is the Toledo Cheese Days Parade, with a theme of “Giving Back.” The parade starts at Fifth and Augustus streets at 11 a.m., moves east on Augustus to Second, south on Second to Oak, the west on Oak to Fifth.

Ribbons will be presented to the first- and second-place in all divisions.

Free cheese sandwiches will served at the Presbyterian Church at noon.

Sunday’s events include a Lioness Club Toledo Cheese Cake by the Slice (noon-2:30 p.m., Toledo Lions Club Beef Barbecue (12:30-3 p.m.) and 10th annual Pie Auction (following barbecue).

College Plans Paint Night

Centralia College will host a bonus Paint Night for the community at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The college will provide paint, canvases, brushes, aprons, snacks and wine (photo identification required). Participants will be able to take home their painting. No artistic skill or experience is necessary.

Cost is $25 per person. Early registration is advised since space is limited. Paint Night will be held in Room 108 in Washington Hall.

Instructors Sue Wachter and Joan Hitchcock will lead Paint Night participants through a simple painting from start to finish. The featured painting will be a flower; painters can customize the flower colors to suit their taste and décor.

Additional Paint Nights are scheduled for July 28, Aug. 25 and Sept. 8.

First Art and Craft Fair Planned for Mineral School

Mineral School is hosting its first-ever annual art and craft fair Friday through Sunday. Admission is free, and visitors can see a showcase of affordable as well as “fine art” made by artisans from Lewis County and the greater Cascades region, including jewelry, pottery, paintings, wood carvings and more. 

The show will be in the Mineral School gymnasium. The school is located at 114 Mineral Road S., Mineral.

Pickers’ Fest to Be Held at Winlock’s Winolequa Park

The 16th annual Winlock Pickers’ Fest is coming to Winlock’s Winolequa Park Friday through Sunday.

- Friday’s schedule includes:

White Pass Reunion to Honor Classes of 1965 and 1966

The biennial White Pass all-school reunion will be Saturday in the Commons area on the White Pass School campus.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m., with a noon potluck lunch. The program is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will honor the class members of the White Pass High School classes of 1965 and 1966.

School alumni will have the chance to visit with fellow classmates and view historical displays and school memorabilia. Former students who have school or class photos, yearbooks or other school-related items are encouraged to bring them along to share.

The White Pass Historical Society will be available for scanning items, and the White Pass Country Historical Museum in Packwood will be available for tours (www.whitepasscountrymuseum.org).

Skookumchuck Grange Plans Barbecue, Auction

The Skookumchuck Grange is holding its eighth annual barbecue and auction Saturday.

The event will be at the Skookumchuck Grange Hall, 5345 Skookumchuck Road SE, Tenino.

A silent auction will be 3-4 p.m., and a live auction will follow with Rick Nelson calling for bids. Proceeds will fund Grange operations; Tenino school programs such as “Words for Thirds,” in which third-graders receive dictionaries; and FFA scholarships.

A full steak dinner will be served 3:30-5 p.m. Prices are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and military, and $10 for children age 6-10. Children 5 and under and those over 100 are free.

To drive to the Grange, take state Highway 507 to 18th Avenue, cross the railroad tracks and drive about 3 miles to the Grange hall.
