Editor’s Best Bet: Onalaska to Host Apple Harvest Festival
A pie-eating contest, parade and 5k fun run/2-mile walk are among the variety of events that will be going on Friday through Sunday at the Onalaska Apple Harvest Festival.
Registration for the fun run and walk starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday in the Carlisle Lake parking lot. The event gets underway at 9 a.m. In addition, there is a Kids 1-mile Fun Run/Walk at 8 a.m., also at the Carlisle Lake parking lot.
The parade gets underway at 11 a.m. Saturday on Carlisle Avenue, the main road that runs through the middle of Onalaska. Grand marshal will be Adolf “Swede” Johnson.
3 p.m. Saturday will be the pie-eating contest at the intersection of Carlisle and Fourth. It is sponsored by Jackson Prairie Church Women’s Ministries.
A quilt show run will all three days of the Apple Harvest Festival at Heavenly Quilts on Carlisle Avenue.
Music on the Main Stage Saturday on Carlisle Avenue will feature the Two Town Tuners, noon-12:30; Newaukum River Band, 12:30-1:30; Strait Shot, 2-3; the OHS Percussion Ensemble, 3-3:20; Free Creature, 3-4:30; and Evan & Tina, 4:30-5.

‘Ghostbusters’ Will Be Shown at Corbet Theatre
Historic Fox Theatre Restorations will be screening the next film in its 2016 Film Series, the 1984 action/adventure/comedy “Ghostbusters,” at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Centralia College’s Corbet Theatre.
Three odd-ball scientists get kicked out of their cushy positions at a university in New York City where they studied the occult. They decide to set up shop in an old firehouse and become Ghostbusters, trapping pesky ghosts, spirits, haunts and poltergeists for money. They wise-crack their way through the city, and stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, one which will release untold evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters are then called on to save the Big Apple. The film is rated PG.
Admission for the movie is $10 per person, $8 for members, and $25 per family (three to four persons).

Mycological Society to Meet at Courthouse
Danny Miller, education chair of the Puget Sound Mycological Society, will be the guest presenter at the 6 p.m. Tuesday meeting of the Southwest Washington Mycological Society.
Miller is helping to design and teach the curriculum for the Puget Sound club’s mycology classes. He is also the club librarian, and an ID Committee member and emergency poisoning point person for King County Washington Poison Control.
Miller also belongs to the PNW Key Council, a group of amateur and professional mycologists, and is a co-author of MatchMaker, the free PNW mushroom ID program. He has a big interest in taxonomy and figuring out where all of the mushrooms fit into the fungal tree of life.
Those who attend the meeting are encouraged to bring a laptop, tablet or smartphone with the Matchmaker software installed (www.matchmakermushrooms.com). The software is available for PC, Mac, iPad/iPhone, Kindle Fire and Android systems. Also bring any mushrooms you would like to have identified.
Meeting are held in the Agricultural Extension meeting room, located in the basement of the Lewis County Courthouse (near the west entrance). Those with accessibility issues may find the east entrance more accommodating.
