Prairie Appreciation Day Planned for Mima Mounds Area

The 21st annual Prairie Appreciation Day will be Saturday at Thurston County’s Glacial Heritage and the Department of Natural Resources Mima Mounds Natural Areas.

There is no admission charge for the event, which will run 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

These are two of the largest remaining remnants of the endangered prairie ecosystem in Western Washington.

In May, the prairie is usually spangled with swaths of blue camas with accents of spring gold and buttercups. With this year’s early spring, it looks like the peak of the camas bloom will have passed, but the next wave of bloom will be in full swing, and it has more variety.

At Glacial Heritage Preserve there are two interpretive loops, one of about 1 mile (the Activity Trail) and the other about 4 miles (the Self-Guided Trail).

The Activity Trail contains a number of informative stations covering various aspects of South Sound prairies. They include topics such as prairie ecology, restoration, management of invasive plants, and the wildlife and wildflowers found in this unique ecosystem.

The stations have experts to discuss each topic as well as activities for children and the young at heart. Take the opportunity to make seed balls, try your hands at writing with ink made from oak galls, talk to experts about gardening with native prairie plants or how fire is used to restore prairies. Or just bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the hayride.

The Self-Guided Trail has interpretive signs pointing out many of the unique features of these prairies.

Black Hills Audubon Society will be hosting a 7:30 a.m. bird walk at Glacial Heritage. More information is available at http://blackhills-audubon.org/.

At Mima Mounds, visitors may walk around the mounds in full flower and learn restoration techniques like broom pulling. This location is fully handicapped accessible with a paved trail that is ideal for families with toddlers and those who want a less strenuous experience. In addition, group tours of Mima Mounds can be arranged by sending an email to prairieappreciationday@gmail.com.

Because these are nature preserves, pets are not allowed.

Those wishing to donate to the Thurston County Food Bank can do so at either location. Items with glass are not accepted.

Directions to the sites can be found at prairieappreciationday.org.

Author to Unveil Latest Bakeshop Mystery ‘On Thin Icing’

Pacific Northwest mystery writer Ellie Alexander, author of “On Thin Icing,” the the third in the “Bakeshop Mysteries” series, will be at the Chehalis Timberland Library 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday. A local baker will provide treats inspired by the book.

Like the first two novels, “On Thin Icing” is set in Ashland, Oregon, home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Besides page-turning suspense, the books give readers a taste of Shakespeare, the charm of Ashland, and original, handcrafted recipes for pastries and sweets.

The Portland Book Review deems it “grand theater.”

“The author has baked up a delectable tale of murder and intrigue, as well as tasty pies, puddings, and pastries. This whodonut … er, whodunit, is well spiced with sweet treats and artisan coffee, enough to keep the reader guessing (and happy) with every turn,” the Book Review said.

The first two books in the series are “Meet Your Baker” and “A Batter of Life and Death.” All three books are available at Timberland regional libraries.

The Chehalis Timberland Library is located at 400 N. Market Blvd. For more information, call the library at (360) 748-3301 or visit www.TRL.org.

Olympia Historian to Speak at Borst Home Open House

Pioneer travel and trade routes will be the focus of an open house 1:30-3:30 p.m.Saturday at the Borst Home, Carriage House and One-Room Schoolhouse.

OIympia historian Scott Bartlett will be speaking 2-3:30 p.m. in the school about pioneer travel, assisted by Olympian Etta Keller, and her daughters, Clara and Courtney, who will be in costume. The three women wore Victorian dresses for the April 9 open house.

The historical buildings are located at the south end of Fort Borst Park in Centralia.

For more information, email Jean Bluhm at jeanbluhm@comcast.net or call her at (360) 748-4362.

Open House Planned by 3 Feathers Emu Ranch

As a part of their participation in the 2016 National Emu Week May 7-15, Janean Parker and Tony Citrhyn, owners of 3 Feathers Emu Ranch, are inviting folks to come out to their Spring Visit Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Cost is $2 per person, which will include touring the pens and incubation area, viewing baby emu chicks, making feather and egg shell crafts, and an activity book for children.

The emu ranch is located north of Adna at 722 Deep Creek Road.

Originally from Australia, emus are being raised in the United States for their lean red meat and their oil that is used for skin conditions, but farmers like Parker and Citrhyn find additional income in the other co-products from the emu, such as, leather, feathers and eggs.

Unlike other poultries, emu is not taken to auction or sold directly to slaughter facilities. The farmer arranges for processing and handles sale of the end products.

During the open house, all 3 Feathers products will be available to sample and purchase.

While touring the farm, visitors will be able to view the emu breeders and yearlings, as well as chicks.

If you cannot make it to the open house, but would like schedule a farm tour for your group or find out more information about emu meat, emu oil or emu eggs, call (360) 748-3031 or visit threefeathersemus.com.

For more information about the American Emu Association or the emu industry visit the AEA website at www.aea-emu.org or call (541) 332-0675.
