Editor’s Best Bet: Relay for Life Coming to SWW Fairgrounds

Relay for Life will be celebrating 30 years in Lewis County this year.

The annual 24-hour event, which will be Friday and Saturday at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds, raises money and awareness to fight cancer.

This year the local theme will be “86 Cancer” because 1986 is the year Relay For Life started in the county.

Linda Tomasheck, chairwoman of Relay For Life, said teams and attendees can expect a 1980s theme with lots of music from that decade.

Relay for Life begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and lasts until 4 p.m. on Saturdy.

Relay for Life will kick off as it usually does with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. followed by the survivor and caregiver lap.

For the first time Applebee’s is sponsoring a survivors’ dinner at the fairgrounds at 6:45 p.m., and survivors will be allowed to bring one guest.

At 7 p.m. the Backfire Band will take the stage.

New this year, a fireworks show will follow at 9 p.m.

The traditional luminaria ceremony will follow the fireworks display at 11 p.m.

On Saturday attendees can participate in yoga at 1 a.m. and nia holistic dancing at 2 a.m.

The Chinese lantern ceremony will be at 3 a.m. Glow in the dark bowling will begin at 4:30 a.m., and ring toss will follow at 5:30 a.m.

A new band called Kiwi Dragon will perform starting at 8 a.m.

Tips N Toes salon will be cutting hair donations for Cut for a Cure at 10 a.m., a new event for Relay for Life.

New this year as well, Valley View Health Center is bringing a health fair to the event from noon to 4 p.m.

Quiznos is providing a team captain lunch at 12:30 p.m., a new event to show appreciation for all they do to prepare for Relay For Life.

This year’s Miss Lewis County Bailey Peters will be performing with the band Just Cuz at 1 p.m.

A silent auction and children’s activities will also take place throughout Relay for Life.

‘The Yearling’ Coming to Fox Theatre

Historic Fox Theatre Restorations will be showing the next film in its 2016 Film Series, the 1946 drama, “The Yearling,” on Saturday.

Based on the novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, this drama focuses on the family of Civil War veteran Penny Baxter (Gregory Peck), who lives and works on a farm in Florida with his wife, Orry (Jane Wyman), and their son, Jody (Claude Jarman Jr.). The only surviving child of the family, Jody longs for companionship and unexpectedly finds it in the form of an orphaned fawn. While Penny is supportive of his son’s four-legged friend, Orry is not, leading to heartbreaking conflict. The film is rated G.

The film will be shown at 2 and 7 p.m. at the Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia. Admission is $10 per person, $8 for members and $25 per family (three to four persons).

Presale tickets are available on Brown Paper Tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2541831, at Book ‘n’ Brush in Chehalis, and Holley’s Place, HUBBUB, Santa Lucia Coffee and PostNet in Centralia.

Meet the ‘Wild Things of Seminary Hill’ at Family-Friendly Walk Saturday

Families and children of all ages are invited to take an evening stroll with a wildlife biologist at 6 p.m. Saturday during the free “Wild Things of the Seminary Hill Natural Area” hike and talk.

The walk marks the return of wildlife biologist Blake Murden, who led this popular wildlife walk for many years. This year he and environmental educator Kelly Stanley are returning after taking a hiatus for several years.

They’ll lead a fun hands-on activity, helping children discover the mammals, amphibians, birds and insects of Centralia’s hillside forest.

This walk — 6 p.m. — is a different start time than most walks hosted by the Friends of the Seminary Hill Natural Area.

The walk will be geared toward children and families, and is the first of the “Year of the Child” set of walks on the Seminary Hill Natural Area.

As always, free cookies and refreshments will be provided.

The walk begins in the Barner Drive parking lot at the eastern end of Locust Street, just a few blocks east of downtown Centralia.
