Editor’s Best Bet: SWW Fairgrounds to Host Garlic Fest

Garlic takes center stage this weekend as the 19th annual Chehalis Garlic Fest and Craft Show comes to the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds.

Garlic Fest will include creative garlic cuisine, artisans and crafts, vendors, kids’ crafts and live music and a beer garden. 

Four bands will be on the stage Friday and five on Saturday. Friday’s lineup will include Locust St. Dixieland Band, Bruce Maier Band, Julie Calkins & Dave Broyles and the Ben Potter Band. The first performance is at noon, and a new band will take over every two hours.

Saturday’s schedule, which starts at 10 a.m., will include Two Town Tuners, Clarissa Gifford, Chris Guenther, Prohibition and Backfire Band.

On Sunday, it will be Raucous at noon and Triple Thr33 at 2 p.m.

General admission is $5. Military and seniors age 65 and up are $4. Kids 7 and under are free. Free parking is available.

Hours are noon-7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

Proceeds from Garlic Fest benefit local charities and organizations.

Quarter Milers to Host Hub City Car Show

Hundreds of fancy cars will fill Tower Avenue in downtown Centralia Saturday for the Hub City Car Show. The show is sponsored by the Lewis County Quarter Milers.

Registration for the show commences at 8 a.m., and the show runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Actually, festivities begin the night before when a barbecue is held at Ken’s Service, 515 W. Main St. Registration for those showing cars also will be available Friday night. Entry fee is $15 per vehicle.

KITI-FM (Live 95) will be providing music during the show, and also will be presenting a car at about 1 p.m.

Door prizes will be given to entrants. At 3 p.m., trophies will be given to the top vehicles.

Shirts in memory of Bob Judson and Mike Geiger will be available for $15. Judson, who died in June 2014, was secretary-treasurer of the Quarter Milers. Geiger stepped down as president of the Quarter Milers recently after serving for 20 years. Judson’s and Geiger’s vehicles are depicted on the shirts.

Threshing Bee to Display Old-Fashioned Grain Harvesting

Old tractors and farm equipment will be on display during the 51st annual Cowlitz Prairie Grange Threshing Bee Saturday and Sunday.

Threshing grain will take place every hour on the hour with an antique separator. A tractor pull will include 150 tractors. More than 100 antique and craft vendors will be on site.

Breakfast and dinner will be available both days.

The Threshing Bee takes place near the South Lewis County Airport on Jackson Highway north of Toledo.

I-5 Toyota Back to School Dash Scheduled

The ninth annual I-5 Toyota Back to School Dash, a 5k run-walk, will at 9 a.m. Sunday.

The run-walk will begin and end at I-5 Toyota.

Registration will be taken at I-5 Toyota, 1950 NW Louisiana Ave., Chehalis, or at www.I-5Cars.com. The fee, which includes a T-shirt and snacks, is $50 for families, $25 for individuals and $15 for students.

Signups will be allowed until one hour before the event. However, T-shirts will be guaranteed only if registration is done a week ahead.

Ribbons will be awarded in eight age groups for men and women.

Refreshments will be available on-site, and there will be a variety of vendor booths. All proceeds will benefit local school scholarships.
