Lyceum Speaker to Discuss ‘Disruptive Innovations’

Samuel Small, a software engineer and assistant professor of computer science at Centralia College, will be giving  Lyceum presentation at the college Wednesday called “Disruptive Innovations, Educating Tomorrow’s Students.”

Disruptive innovations are considered a catalyst to bring about more equitable access to high-quality education. Tomorrow’s technology brings about a whole host of potentials, and a lot of potential concerns.

This lyceum explores current cutting edge educational technologies, how they will disrupt the way schools do business as educators, and what the future holds for brick and mortar institutions.

Small will review artificial intelligence, augmented/virtual reality, social media, massive open online classrooms and more.

The lecture will be at 1 p.m. in Washington Hall 103. It is free and open to the public. Lyceum may also be taken as a one-credit humanities course.

Evergreen Playhouse Plans Final Show

The Evergreen Playhouse in June will be presenting its final play in the 2015-16 season, and it’s the only musical this season, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

Show dates will be June 3-5, 9-12 and 16-19. Fridays and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.

This show tells the tale of a county spelling bee, and the 10-12 year olds that are competing in the bee. Part of the humor of the show is that the kids are all played by adults. Each contestant tries to make his/her way through the annual bee and come out as the champion at the end.  Although this is a show about kids, it should be noted that this is an adult show with adult humor.

“This show is a rip-roaring good time,” director Shane Rivers said. “There are times that will make you laugh, cry, sing, and just enjoy your evening altogether.  The theme of this show is about how we can come to terms with who we are. Several of us have things about ourselves that we don’t like, but in the end, if we are able to accept ourselves, flaws and all, we are going to find a lot more happiness in this thing we call life.”

Audiences will have the chance to have a first look at the EP’s 2016-17 season as the theater will be announcing it during the run of this production.

The Evergreen Playhouse is located at 226 W. Center St., Centralia. Tickets are available at the door or through www.evergreenplayhouse.com. They are $10 for adults and $8 for students.
