Editor’s Best Bet: Chehalis Watershed Festival to Join Summerfest Activities
The Chehalis Watershed Festival is coming to Fort Borst Park, Centralia, during Summerfest this Fourth of July.
The Watershed Festival celebrates the Chehalis River, and the plants, animals and people who depend on the river and its watershed. Local volunteers will provide activities that are both educational and fun.
Come slide down the “Drain Dare” and learn how to keep water in the Chehalis River clean. Try your hand at moving earth like a river with the River Table. Learn about the fish you might see in the Chehalis River, including the spooky lamprey. You can also try out the Salmon Life-Cycle Beanbag Toss, Fishing for Facts and How Wetlands Work.
The celebration, sponsored by the Chehalis Basin Partnership will be at 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, July 4, by Fort Borst Park Pond. For more information, visit chehalisbasinpartnership.org.

Oakville to Celebrate Independence Day
The Oakville Independence Day Parade and Celebration is coming to the Grays Harbor County town Saturday.
The town’s parade commences at 11 a.m.
The re-enactment of the robbery of the Oakville State Bank will take place following the parade at the Oakville Regional Events Center.
Also on the schedule is a beer garden from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., live music from noon to 7 p.m., free pony rides for the kids, and food and craft vendors from noon to 5 p.m.
The Oakville Fourth of July celebration is sponsored by the Oakville Chamber of Commerce.

The Randle Firefighters Association is hosting its annual Independence Day Celebration Sunday.

Centralia to Celebrate Fourth of July With Summerfest
Summerfest, Centralia’s annual Fourth of July celebration, will be Monday, with activities at Fort Borst Park, the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds and downtown Centralia.
Fort Borst Park
• A free Sierra Pacific pancake breakfast will be served 7-10 a.m. in Kitchen 1.
• The 11th annual “I Ran From the Cops” 8k run and 1.5-mile health walk begins at 8:30 a.m. It is offered by the Centralia Police Officers Association and Thorbeckes FitLife Center. Registration ($20) will be taken in advance at the Centralia Police Department or beginning at 7 a.m. the day of the event. The starting line is next to Dick Scott Little League Field.
• Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a SWAT officer? The SWAT Challenge, near the Dick Scott Little League Field, is an opportunity to take the actual Centralia Police Department entry-level team exam. Registration is $20.
• Free entertainment, games, trolley rides, hay rides, a historical military display and more will take place 10 a.m.-3 p.m. throughout the park.
• A hot dog lunch is served 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Shelter 1 by the lake.
• Free tours of the Borst Home and One-Room Schoolhouse will be available 10 a.m.-2 p.m. In the schoolhouse, kids will be provided with crayons and papers with Borst pictures on them to color. Friends of the Borst Horse will be wearing period costumes in the heirloom gardens
• Free tours of the Borst Blockhouse Fort will be given from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Southwest Washington Fairgrounds
• Destruction Derby tickets go on sale at 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for age 13 and up, $7 for kids age 6-12 and active military, and free for kids 5 and under. The Destruction Derby will be at 7 p.m.
• A free fireworks display will commence at 10:30 p.m.
Downtown Centralia
The Windermere Real Estate Fourth of July parade gets underway at 4 p.m. The parade theme is “Pearl Harbor Heroes 75th Anniversary.” Grand marshal is Bill Furrer.

Cheese Days Coming to Toledo
The surge in Lewis County area community festivals rolls on with Toledo Cheese Days July 7-10.
It all gets underway Thursday, July 7, with a coloring contest for preschoolers through fourth-graders. Participants can pick up the contest picture at Toledo Market Fresh, and must be turned in by July 3 at the store.
On Thursday night is the Toast of the Big Cheese, at the Morgan Arts Centre, 190 Plomondon Road. Tickets are $12.50. This year’s Big Cheeses are Lewis and Jan Rohrig.
Friday’s events include the Cheddar Open Golf Tournament, Second Time Around Garage Sale, start of Toledo Tennis Tournament, Frog Jumping Contest and bingo.
A key event on Saturday is the 16th annual Car & Motorcycle Show, starting at 7 a.m. at the Toledo Middle School football field. Entry fee is $20. Awards will be at 3 p.m.
Also on Saturday is the Toledo Cheese Days Parade, with a theme of “Giving Back.” The parade starts at Fifth and Augustus streets at 11 a.m., moves east on Augustus to Second, south on Second to Oak, then west on Oak to Fifth.
Ribbons will be presented to the first- and second-place in all divisions.
Free cheese sandwiches will served at the Presbyterian Church at noon.
Sunday’s events include a Lioness Club Toledo Cheese Cake by the Slice (noon-2:30 p.m.,) Toledo Lions Club Beef Barbecue (12:30-3 p.m.) and 10th annual Pie Auction (following barbecue).
