Editor’s Best Bet: Cheese Days Continues in Toledo

Toledo’s Cheese Days continues through Sunday.

A key event on Saturday is the 16th annual Car & Motorcycle Show, starting at 7 a.m. at the Toledo Middle School football field. Entry fee is $20. Awards will be a 3 p.m.

Also on Saturday is the Toledo Cheese Days Parade, with a theme of “Giving Back.” The parade starts at Fifth and Augustus streets at 11 a.m., moves east on Augustus to Second, south on Second to Oak, the west on Oak to Fifth.

Ribbons will be presented to the first- and second-place in all divisions.

Free cheese sandwiches will served at the Presbyterian Church at noon.

Sunday’s events include a Lioness Club Toledo Cheese Cake by the Slice (noon-2:30 p.m., Toledo Lions Club Beef Barbecue (12:30-3 p.m.) and 10th annual Pie Auction (following barbecue).

Pickers’ Fest Has Workshops, Performances Planned

The 16th annual Winlock Pickers’ Fest, at Winlock’s Winolequa Park, has several workshops scheduled for Saturday, as well as evening performances.

The 9-10 a.m. workshops will be: Guitar, Dave Peterson, Puddletown Ramblers; Fiddle, Barb Collins; Banjo, Tye Menser, Oly Mountain Boys; Mandolin, Rob Hakanson, Great Northern Planes; and Bass, Richard Roth. 

At 10 a.m.-11 a.m. will be Gypsy Jazz, Pearl Djangho.

At 11-noon will be Dobro, Jim Miernky.

A mandolin workshop by Don Stiernberg will be 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Other Saturday events include a slow jam, noon-1 p.m.; Kids activities, 1-3 p.m., and open mic 1-6 p.m.

Saturday’s performances include:

5-5:45 p.m.: Puddletown Ramblers

6-6:45 p.m.: Peal Django

7-7:45 p.m.: Oly Mountain Boys

8-8:45 p.m.: Don Stiernberg

The Pickersfest Beer and Wine Garden will again be open noon-9 p.m.

On Sunday is the gospel show, with performances by the Puddletown Ramblers 10-10:45 a.m. and Great Northern Planes 11-11:45 a.m.

Saturday admission for those 13 and up is $15, but $10 for WAMA members. Children 12 and under are free.

Admission Sunday is free for everyone.

Camping is available at $10 per night.

White Pass Reunion to Honor Classes of 1965 and 1966    

The biennial White Pass all-school reunion will be Saturday in the Commons area on the White Pass School campus.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m., with a noon potluck lunch. The program is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will honor the class members of the White Pass High School classes of 1965 and 1966.

School alumni will have the chance to visit with fellow classmates and view historical displays and school memorabilia. Former students who have school or class photos, yearbooks or other school-related items are encouraged to bring them along to share.

The White Pass Historical Society will be available for scanning items, and the White Pass Country Historical Museum in Packwood will be available for tours (www.whitepasscountrymuseum.org).

Skookumchuck Grange Plans Barbecue, Auction

The Skookumchuck Grange is holding its eighth annual barbecue and auction Saturday.

The event will be at the Skookumchuck Grange Hall, 5345 Skookumchuck Road SE, Tenino.

A silent auction will be 3-4 p.m., and a live auction will follow with Rick Nelson calling for bids. Proceeds will fund Grange operations; Tenino school programs such as “Words for Thirds,” in which third-graders receive dictionaries; and FFA scholarships.

A full steak dinner will be served 3:30-5 p.m. Prices are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and military, and $10 for children age 6-10. Children 5 and under and those over 100 are free.

To drive to the Grange, take state Highway 507 to 18th Avenue, cross the railroad tracks and drive about 3 miles to the Grange hall.

St. Timothy to Hold Car Boot Sale

St. Timothy Episcopal Church, located at 18th and Snively in Chehalis, will hold its first-ever British Style Car Boot Sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the church grounds.

A car boot sale combines the fun of a garage sale with the ease of simply driving in and selling your unwanted items out of the boot (British slang for a trunk) of your car. 

Community members can reserve a 16- by 18 foot-spot in the sale for only $15. Space is limited so advanced reservations are suggested.

Pioneer Pie Social Set for Claquato Church              

Returning this year to the historic Claquato Church and cemetery will be the 11th annual Pioneer Pie Social, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The event will feature a live pie auction with Todd Mason, entertainment and live music by Chris Guenther and emcee Peter Abbarno.

Activities will include chicken bingo, candy scramble, pie-by-the-slice, water balloon toss and a raffle.

 New this year will be face painting for the kids. 

The Pioneer Pie Social is sponsored by the Lewis County Historical Museum.
