Talk on Easter Rebellion Coming to Centralia Library

On a symbolic Christian holiday in 1916, Irish rebels in the city of Dublin rose in armed protest against the British occupiers.

Historian, musician and educator Hank Cramer will present “The Seven Tongues of Flame: Ireland’s Easter Rebellion of 1916” at the Centralia Timberland Library 2-4 p.m. Saturday.

After 500 years of British occupation and countless bloody Irish rebellions, what was it about Easter Sunday, 1916 that was different? Cramer will tell the story in the spirit of that day — through poetry, song and folk traditions — revealing how artistic and intellectual leaders succeeded where military commanders before them had failed.

Their victory was later commemorated in the popular ballad, “The Foggy Dew,” an example of what Cramer terms the “folk process,” through which traditional songs have evolved.

“The Seven Tongues of Flame” is presented by Humanities Washington.

After the program, Cramer and The MacInnis Sisters will perform a free Celtic music concert.

As a vocalist and guitarist, Cramer has built a repertoire of more than 1,000 modern and traditional songs spanning the folk music genre. He has released several music albums and earned accolades from public radio affiliates spanning the Pacific Northwest, Texas and the Midwest.
