Republican 3rd District Congressional candidate David Castillo continued criticism of incumbent U.S. Rep. Brian Baird Tuesday over the congressman’s recent vote against a defense authorization act.

Baird voted against the bill last week as part of his ongoing push to get a bill requiring a 72-hour wait period before the passage of legislation during which it would be posted online for public review. Baird has introduced a petition that would bring the measure to the House floor for a vote.

Castillo, an Olympia financial adviser, said in a release that the move by Baird is a political ploy. The Centralia native previously criticized Baird for a similar vote in which he voted against a spending bill that included $1.3 million for flood control studies in the Chehalis River Basin.

On both bills, Baird said he voted ‘no’ to protest the amount of time given for Congress to read them.

“It’s really rather juvenile. He wanted attention for his legislation and he used our troops to get it,” Castillo said in a release. “He has been powerless to move this bill for more than five years and as a result, he now decides our brave soldiers must pay for his lack of leadership.”

Castillo questioned in the release why Baird had not made similar statements on a sweeping climate change bill and the most recent stimulus bill. Baird has said he voted in favor of the climate legislation because of the inclusion of a measure that allows forest waste to be used as renewable energy.

Baird also voted against the 2008 stimulus package in protest of the amount of time the House had to read the bill.

Welcome to the discussion.

Mr./Ms. Intrepid, thanks for the claification. I'm curious, how do you feel about the anonymous comments from CastilloForCongress? Shouldn't he, his campaign supporters or whoever is doing so own up to them?

Mr. Smith,That is not at all what I was implying, just to clarify. I would not want my comments to be misconstrued. When I said Mr. Castillo is correct I was referring to his statements in the article, not the comment above mine.

Mr. Castillo is correct. Rep. Baird is as partisan as they come it seems. He grandstands on the issue of not having enough time to read a bill, but has no problem ignoring this supposed conviction when it is a vote on a bill such as the stimulus and Cap & Trade under President Obama. However when it comes to voting on a bill that is not part of the Democratic agenda he wavers. David Castillo would not do this as our representative. http://www.castilloforcongress.com/home/

Speaking of political deception, who is this "CastilloForCongress" speaking? Why is there no name attached? Who is accountable for what is said?

Once again Mr. Baird tries to confuse and mislead voters. He knows he didn't have 72-hours to view Cap & Trade and he knows that Castillo is talking about the Obama stimulus plan this year, NOT the Bush stimulus plan last year. The people are sick and tired of political deception and hypocrisy Brian. Now we have a real choice in David Castillo.
