Brandon Swanson BREAKING NEWS: Family, Officers Travel Far to Remember Fallen Deputy

Posted: Wednesday, August 26, 2009 12:00 am

LACEY — Hundreds of officers from all over the Northwest filled the stands of the Marcus Pavilion at St. Martin’s University Wednesday, in honor and remembrance of a Lewis County sheriff’s deputy and family man.

Stephen “Mike” Gallagher died at a Seattle hospital Aug. 18, 24 hours after he collided with an elk on the way to a domestic dispute call in Packwood. He was 34.

Mike’s family members embraced one another and shed tears in front of his closed, flag-laden casket at the memorial. His young son and daughter held their mother as friends and fellow officers attempted to explain a life of service in few words.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better partner,” said Mike’s former Lewis County Jail coworker, Chehalis Police officer Chris Taylor. “He had the heart of a lion and the patience of a father. He loved being a soldier, but his love for his family was greater.”

Mike served in the sheriff’s office for six years after eight years of service with the U.S. Army. Friends said he left the service to be closer to his wife and kids.

The emotional procession left deputies and family members clutching tissues and holding those close to them. Sheriff Steve Mansfield’s voice shook as he described the fallen soldier.

“You have met our mission,” Mansfield said of Mike in a speech. “You have upheld your oath of office, and you have made a positive difference in my life. Rest in peace. You’re a fine soldier, a strong warrior, a good man and a special gift to all of us.”

Editor's note: This story has been changed since it was originally published online to correct the date of Deputy Gallagher's death.
