A wildfire that is an estimated 6 acres is currently burning in a remote and inaccessible area of the Goat Rocks Wilderness in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

The smoke from the fire may be visible from U.S. Highway 12 and Packwood; however, district rangers assure people the fire is not a threat to anyone or any property, according to Diana Perez, public affairs officer with the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

“Public and firefighter safety are our top priorities and drive how we act to suppress this fire,” said District Ranger Gar Abbas in a press release. “Presently, there is no known threat to the public. Fire suppression resources will continue monitoring the situation and take action as needed.”

The fire has not caused any trail or road closures, according to Perez. Fire personnel are making daily weather and fire observations of the area. They are actively examining the surrounding area for appropriate locations to safely construct containment or contingency lines, if needed.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this point; however, the area received numerous lightning strikes in mid-August. The fire was first reported Sept. 7.
